Wackies (aka, No Bake Cookies)
My Great Grandma Pansy used to make these cookies for us. She always called them Wackies. Growing up, I just assumed that this name was the only name associated with this cookie. It wasn’t until years later when I had heard someone talking about No Bake Cookies and associated the two.
Ingredients:
-
2 cups sugar
- 3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (I do heaping Tablespoons)
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 pinch salt
- 3 1/4 cups quick cooking oats
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
In a saucepan, bring sugar, cocoa, butter, milk and salt to a rapid boil for 1 minute. When it has boiled for 1 minute, turn off the burner and remove from the heat.

(I love the way peanut butter looks when it melts.) |
Working quickly, drop by teaspoonfuls (You can also use a cookie scoop.) onto waxed paper.
Let cool and set up, then enjoy!
*Note – The original recipe calls for 3 cups of quick cooking oats, but I have found that 3 1/4 cups makes the cookies set up just perfect for me.
Was your grandma from Carroll County Arkansas? That’s the only place I’ve ever heard them called wackies!:)
I believe she lived in Boone County Arkansas, most of her life. But we have a lot of family in Carroll County too. Small world, huh! When I was younger I didn’t know what a no bake cookie was. I only knew these cookies were called wackies.
Only in Arkansas are no bake cookies called wackies the rest of the country calls them what they are NO BAKE COOKIES.
Well, we just call it like we see it. Because hey, these cookies are kinda wacky. I mean, they are made on the stove top and not baked in the oven like a traditional cookie.
I just stumbled on your page looking for the wackie recipe! I grew up in Carroll County! How crazy that Pinterest brought me to another NWA family!
@Alysa – Haha! It really is a small world, isn’t it. You never know what you’re gonna find on Pinterest! I hope you enjoy the Wackies!
